Rules
This competition is AHA and BJCP sanctioned and open to any amateur homebrewer. All mailed entries must received at the mailing location or drop-off point by the entry deadline - please allow for shipping time.
All entries will be picked up from drop-off locations the day of the entry deadline. Pick-up will not necessarily be at close of business, so do not wait until the end of the last day to drop off your beer. Judges are NOT exempt from this rule.
All entries must be handcrafted products, made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.). Brewers may enter as many beers as they like, but only beers--sorry no meads or ciders.
You must select the Category and Sub-category that you believe most closely describes your beer. BJCP judging is all about hitting the style. Judges can and do downgrade very good beers that do not match the style category in which they were entered. All entries must be accompanied with an Entry Form.
The competition organizers are not responsible for mis-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.
The competition organizers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries.
Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one BJCP judge and usually more.
Categories with a small number of entries may be combined at the discretion of the competition organizers.
The Competition Coordinator or other qualified person will review elements of beer categories and styles with each panel prior to judging.
The Best of Show judging will be determined by a Blue Ribbon Panel based on a second judging of the top winners.
Bottles will not be returned to entrants.
Entry Acceptance Rules
Number of Bottles Required Per Entry: 2
Entrants must submit 2 bottles/cans for each entry. Checks are not allowed for payment.
Use 10 to 14 ounces bottles. Twelve oz. brown glass bottles are preferred. Printed caps are allowed, but must be blacked out completely. Green and clear glass will be accepted. Swing top "Grolsch" bottles and corked bottles will NOT be accepted.text
Bottles will not be returned to contest entrants.
Cans are also acceptable but must be free of any identifiable markings.
When shipping beer, do not use the US post office. Please pack the bottles carefully. Don’t forget the bottom of the box. We had an entry in a previous year that seemed really well packed except the brewer forgot about the bottom of the box and left no padding under the bottles and sadly a bottle broke. We would rather not see packing peanuts-- they make a mess.
Bottle labels are to be printed directly from this website and attached to bottles with packing tape or rubber bands. A garbage bag around all the beers is good to limit the damage if there is a breakage.
Please fill out the entry forms. Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines. Failure to note such ingredients may impact the judges’ scoring of your entry. Note the special ingredients information applies to only certain styles. On most styles, you are not allowed to say anything. The judges do not see the names of the beer. So your clever name that identifies your experimental beer will not be seen by the judge -- put that information in the correct place in the online system if the style dictates the inclusion. We rely on the online system to provide information to judges.
